Better Rates for Malpractice Insurance

A nurse who is becoming an independent contractor writes to ask if there are sources for better priced liability (malpractice) insurance.

As I've pointed out before, I don't recommend such insurance, for a number of reasons. But if you have to have it (maybe a contract you sign requires it) or if you just want to have it (in spite of my superior wisdom :-) here are some ideas for getting a better rate.

First, if you have an general insurance agent (someone who handles a number of areas, such as life, car, home, etc.) see if that agent can offer nurse liability insurance. If the agent can't, they might be able to suggest someone who can. Often, such a person can intercede personally for you, so you're not an unknown to the insurance company.

Secondly, do a net search (google.com, or whatever) and see what turns up. Liability insurance IS getting more expensive, but it is still competitive, and you may be able to find a better deal than NSO, and other such companies.
